Decorating this Christmas
Often when it comes to festive decorating we forget how the everyday can look wonderful if done theatrically. Christmas decorating is also about remembering that the time of renewal is coming again, so find signs of greenery, abundance and life and decorate with these. It’s not all about going out and buying glitzy shiny objects and spending money. A bit of glitz coupled with natural abundance is a great combo for Christmas decoration.
Apples, lemons, oranges or any sort of fruit looks great piled high on a plate or in a glass vase or bowl. You could add a few christmas balls in the mix or even a couple of pine cones. The trick is to use your imagination and see what you can come up with.
Look in shops selling more expensive homewares and see what they are selling as decorations – then come home and see if you can recreate something similar with what you already have
If you have a bannister, hang your cards from it with ribbon. It saves them from falling over as well as adding decoration.
Masses of tea light candles are a wonderfully inexpensive decoration. They can be put in a line along a shelf, 3 or 4 put onto a plate or charger or dotted around a room (safely of course). Tea candles look great in any sort of glass container, so dig out your unused bowls or glasses; even old food jars work well as when the lights are turned down it is only the candles that can be seen.
Big swathes of ivy or green branches abundantly put in a vase can be a dramatic centre piece. There is no need to buy flowers if the budget doesn’t stretch that far in order to get a similar effect.
Most importantly enjoy your decorating, it is part of bringing the spirit of Christmas into your home. What ever you decide to do, do it abundantly and theatrically and enjoy it.
